Fulfilmentcrowd buys Fulfilment.nl to fuel European growth

Fulfilmentcrowd, a technology-driven logistics provider backed by private equity firm Palatine, has acquired Fulfilment.nl, a Dutch ecommerce logistics specialist, in a move that expands its operations in the European market. The deal was announced this week, though financial terms were not disclosed.

Under the agreement, Fulfilment.nl will continue to operate independently within the group. Founder Robin Gerrits and General Manager Mart van der Heijden will remain in charge of daily operations. Customers will gain access to better technology, greater capacity, and the wider global network of fulfilmentcrowd.

A strategic bet on the Netherlands as an EU gateway

The acquisition fits fulfilmentcrowd’s stated strategy of pursuing “value-accretive growth” through majority investments in established, high-performing fulfilment assets. The Netherlands, with its dense transport infrastructure and proximity to major European markets, is considered a key logistics hub. The combined entity aims to better serve cross-border ecommerce demand across the EU.

Lee Thompson, CEO of fulfilmentcrowd, said the deal should improve margins through scale and operational efficiencies. “Fulfilment.nl has achieved consistent volume growth and profitability,” he said. “We are delighted to welcome Robin Gerrits and his team to the group. The Netherlands is a strategically compelling market for eCommerce and a gateway to the EU.”

Gerrits, who founded Fulfilment.nl, described the acquisition as “an exciting next chapter.” He noted that his company had grown rapidly by focusing on service quality and long-term customer partnerships. “Joining fulfilmentcrowd gives us the scale, technology and international reach to accelerate our plan while preserving the values and performance standards that have underpinned our success,” he said.

What the deal means for European logistics

Fulfilmentcrowd is not a household name, but it has been quietly building a presence across Europe. Its backer, Palatine, is a UK-based private equity firm that typically invests in mid-market companies with growth potential. The acquisition adds a profitable, mid-sized operator to the group at a time when cross-border ecommerce in Europe continues to grow, albeit more slowly than during the pandemic boom.

Some industry observers note that consolidation in the European fulfilment sector has been accelerating, as smaller players struggle to invest in automation and software. The independent branding and management may not truly survive under a larger parent company. Fulfilmentcrowd’s approach—keeping acquired firms operationally separate—has worked in other deals, but it carries its own risks around integration and culture.

For now, the two companies will share resources where it makes sense. Fulfilment.nl’s existing warehouse network in the Netherlands will remain in place, and its staff are expected to stay. The group as a whole will now handle fulfilment for a combined customer base that spans fashion, electronics, and consumer goods.

The announcement included a photo of Thompson shaking hands with Gerrits, a classic deal-closing image.

Whether the acquisition leads to measurable margin improvements will depend on how smoothly the two companies can coordinate without disrupting existing customer relationships. Cross-border ecommerce in Europe is a notoriously complex business, with varying tax regimes, customs rules, and last-mile carriers. Fulfilmentcrowd’s technology platform is supposed to simplify that, but the proof will be in the delivery data.

The deal closed earlier this month. No further acquisitions have been announced, but the company’s statement left the door open, noting that it continues to evaluate “value-accretive” opportunities in other European markets.
