Toshiba Debuts New Mobile Retail Solutions

Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions has introduced the TCx® M7, a new mobile device designed to join the existing TCx® M11 in its retail lineup. The addition targets stores where mobile-first strategies have become essential for meeting rising consumer expectations. Shoppers increasingly demand speed, convenience, and personalized service, forcing retailers to rethink how their associates interact with customers on the sales floor.

Transforming the Sales Floor Experience

Away, an award-winning travel and lifestyle brand, has already implemented these Toshiba mobile devices. The change altered how associates engage with customers and manage daily operations. Mohan Itwaru, Senior Director of Direct to Consumer Technology at Away, noted that customers remain at the center of the company’s strategy. He emphasized the need for delivering seamless and intuitive experiences wherever people choose to shop.

“At Away, our customers are at the center of everything we do, and that means delivering seamless, intuitive experiences wherever they choose to shop,” Itwaru said. He added that the new hardware empowers teams with the speed and mobility that modern shoppers expect. This capability transforms any sales floor into a fully capable checkout and service destination. The solutions also keep the team agile for in-store events and ready with built-in scanning and tap-to-pay features.

The shift toward handheld, all-in-one devices reflects a broader industry move away from fixed registers. Historically, retailers relied on stationary points of sale that created bottlenecks during peak hours. By moving the transaction capability to the associate, stores can reduce queue times and improve the flow of foot traffic. This approach aligns with the trend of blending digital convenience with the tactile experience of physical retail.

Hardware Built for Retail Durability

The TCx® M7 is engineered for easy use by store associates. It features a lightweight, ergonomic design with a large 6.5-inch display that allows for clear navigation. The device includes a field-swappable battery and quick charging capabilities to support multi-shift performance. These features ensure that the hardware remains functional throughout a full workday without downtime.

Functionality is a key focus of the new device. It supports tap-to-pay via NFC and SoftPOS payments. The unit also features an RFID grip handle, forward-facing and rear cameras, and a 2D scanner. These tools streamline checkout, inventory management, and task tracking. The device is drop-tested for demanding environments and features a rugged IP68 design. It runs on an Android platform with GMS certification for secure app access.

One specific detail worth noting is the inclusion of the RFID grip handle, a feature not commonly seen in standard consumer smartphones but essential for retail logistics.

Supporting Agile Retail Operations

Robert Parsons, VP Product Portfolio at Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions, expressed pride in supporting Away’s mobile-first vision. He stated that the partnership enables faster and more accurate service. The built-in scanning and tap-to-pay features allow associates to work smarter on a familiar handheld device. Parsons highlighted that the TCx® M7 and TCx® M11 bring benefits to both retailers and customers.

“We are proud to support Away’s mobile-first vision. Together, we are enabling faster, more accurate service with built-in scanning and tap-to-pay features, all on a familiar handheld device that helps associates work smarter and deliver those quality customer experiences,” Parsons said. He noted that these solutions speed up service and reduce common checkout pain points on a single, secure device. The goal is to minimize friction in the buying process.
