Walmart de México y Centroamérica, Mexico’s largest retailer, is expanding its partnership with Vusion, a global leader in AI-powered digitalization for physical commerce. The collaboration aims to deploy Vusion’s EdgeSense connected store platform across Walmart Express stores and eventually transform its Supercenter fleet.
This initiative builds on the existing global relationship between Walmart and Vusion, following successful deployments in Walmart US stores. By the end of 2026, all Walmart Express stores will be equipped with EdgeSense technology, marking the platform’s first large-scale rollout in Latin America.
The initial deployment will include over 1.7 million electronic shelf labels and 180,000 EdgeSense smart rails, making it one of the largest connected store technology projects in the region. Walmart de México y Centroamérica will also pilot the technology in its Bodega format, exploring its potential for other store types.
EdgeSense combines intelligent shelf infrastructure, computer vision, AI, electronic shelf labels, and real-time retail data to create a unified operating system for physical stores. This system allows retailers to automate operations, improve inventory accuracy, and enhance merchandising and shopper engagement.
According to Paul Lewellen, Chief Operating Officer of Walmart de México y Centroamérica, the deployment will modernize store operations, enabling associates to focus more on customer service. Philippe Bottine, Deputy CEO and EVP of Vusion Americas, highlighted the strategic importance of this expansion, emphasizing the shared goal of creating the connected store of the future.
This move establishes Walmart de México y Centroamérica as a pioneer in retail innovation in Latin America, as it becomes the region’s first retailer to implement EdgeSense on a large scale. The partnership seeks to provide a more personalized customer experience, boost associate productivity, and build AI-ready infrastructure for future advancements.
The collaboration between Walmart and Vusion mirrors a broader trend in the retail industry, where companies increasingly rely on technology to improve in-store experiences and operational efficiency. As retailers handle changing consumer expectations and market competition, such alliances are key for maintaining a leading position.
By adopting EdgeSense, Walmart de México y Centroamérica is modernizing its stores and setting a new standard for retail innovation in the region. This deployment is poised to significantly enhance the company’s operational efficiency and customer interaction strategies, solidifying its leadership in Latin American retail.
