Sprouts Farmers Market is launching a new pricing strategy, aiming to boost sales and attract more customers. Starting January 1, the grocery chain will focus on offering better value, especially for health-conscious shoppers.
CEO Nicholas Konat announced the plan during the company’s third-quarter earnings call. He acknowledged the challenges Sprouts has faced, including a 0.9% decline in comparable sales, partly due to the cyclospora outbreak and a tough economic climate.
A Focus on Value and Innovation
The new strategy centers on providing more affordable options without compromising quality. Sprouts will expand its private-label brand, offer innovative products at various price points, and focus on health essentials and convenient meal solutions.
Konat highlighted examples like wellness bowls priced under $10, organic sourdough bread for $4, and family meals for $29.99. These offerings, he said, demonstrate Sprouts’ ability to combine differentiation, quality, and value.
Holiday Price Cuts and Supply Chain Improvements
Leading up to the holidays, Sprouts will reduce prices on healthy and seasonal staples. The company will also invest more in items that are most important to its customers.
To drive profitability, Sprouts will focus on supply chain improvements. By gaining greater control over freshness, service levels, inventory, and shrink, the company aims to respond faster to demand shifts and improve execution.
Technology and Loyalty Programs
Technology will play a key role in the new strategy. Modernizing systems and applying AI will help Sprouts connect data across its business, enabling faster and more efficient scaling.
The loyalty program, now over a year old, will be key in gathering first-party data. This will deepen Sprouts’ understanding of its customers and provide marketing teams with better insights to reach new ones.
Looking Ahead to 2027
Konat outlined three key objectives for 2027: expanding Sprouts’ reach through new locations and ecommerce, strengthening the store model to make healthy eating more affordable, and becoming a stronger partner in customers’ health journeys.
Produce, a key area of focus, presents both challenges and opportunities. While competition is intensifying, Sprouts believes its strong sourcing capabilities will allow it to secure good deals and pass savings on to customers.
For shoppers, this means more affordable options across store categories, particularly in produce. Sprouts aims to strike a balance between conventional and organic offerings, providing good value at the right times.
Fourth-Quarter Outlook and Long-Term Goals
Sprouts anticipates a decline in comparable store sales for the fourth quarter, projecting a 2% to 4% decrease compared to the previous year. The company acknowledges intensified competition and evolving customer preferences, emphasizing the need to accelerate its own evolution. To address these challenges, Sprouts plans to increase innovation, investment, and execution to meet market demands and customer expectations.
