David’s Bridal appoints new chief financial officer

Kathy Cherian has been appointed as the new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of David’s Bridal, a King of Prussia, Pennsylvania-based bridal retailer. As she settles into her role, Cherian’s key priority is to ensure the finance function is involved in early decision-making, rather than evaluating strategic decisions after the fact.

Cherian’s appointment was announced on Tuesday, and she has already begun working on understanding the company’s current capabilities and identifying areas for improvement. “My first step is to understand where we already have those capabilities and where we may need to strengthen them,” she said.

Background and Experience

Cherian has a strong background in finance, having begun her career in accounting and financial controls as a senior accountant for KPMG. She has also worked at Nike for 12 years, holding various roles including head of revenue and profitability, global finance, and corporate planning.

Before joining David’s Bridal, Cherian served as CFO for Magnolia, a homeware retailer based in Waco, Texas. Her experience at Magnolia, a private, founder-led company, required her to think about financial performance, capital structure, new ventures, technology, and governance. Notably, Cherian previously held the role of CFO for Nike Canada, where she had total financial control over the company during a period of significant growth and disruption, starting in 2015.

Finance Function and Growth

Under the leadership of CEO Kelly Cook, David’s Bridal has initiated a pivot to an asset-light business focused on digital expansion. The company’s “Aisle to Algorithm” plan includes the launch of products such as the “Pearl Planner” solution, which uses generative AI to assist users with wedding planning. First launched in August 2025, David’s has expanded the platform to include a vendor solution enabling wedding professionals to market and communicate with potential clients.

Driving Visibility and Discipline

As David’s Bridal continues to focus on growth and new business models, the finance function needs to keep pace. Cherian’s role will involve creating clarity around how to measure progress and evaluate investments, while maintaining strong controls, forecasting, and cash discipline.

The company is building new solutions and capabilities while also focusing on ensuring its core retail business stays strong. Cherian notes that the finance function plays a significant role in creating transparency around different areas of the business, which can have very different investment profiles and economics.

Cherian’s goal is to ensure that the company understands where it has the ability to invest, where it’s seeing evidence that something is working, and where it may need to adjust its approach. “Done well, financial discipline actually enables innovation,” she said.

David’s is continuing to focus on expanding its business-to-business offerings.
